Westmeath minors must travel to Navan for Leinster semi-final

LEINSTER Council has confirmed that the upcoming Leinster Minor Football Championship semi-final between Westmeath and Meath will take place in Navan.

The topic of who had home advantage for the match - scheduled for Saturday, July 6 - had been a source of much speculation and debate over recent days, since Tommy Carr’s Westmeath side defeated Wicklow in the quarter-final stage.

However, a Leinster Council official today (Wednesday) confirmed to the Westmeath Independent that the fixture has been pencilled in for the Meath venue.

The official said that there is a ‘home and away agreement’ in place between the two counties - and given that Westmeath held home advantage when the sides met in the same grade in 2012, Meath must have home advantage this time around.

In last year’s semi-final between the same two protagonists at Cusack Park, Meath emerged to reach the final after a fairly comfortable victory over the Lake County.

The other semi-final in this year’s minor competition sees the defending Leinster and All-Ireland champions Dublin play Kildare.
