New room opens for mothers on Maternity Unit at MRH Mullingar

Regional Hospital Mullingar marked this year’s International Day of the Midwife on May 5 by opening a new room at its Maternity Unit.

The Danu Suite is a room for new mothers on the Postnatal Ward within the Maternity Unit. Danu was considered the great mother of Ireland.

“International Day of the Midwife has never been more important in Regional Hospital Mullingar. Covid has brought new challenges and has put even greater pressure on both our midwifery/medical team and expectant mothers. The Danu Suite is another example of how we are aiming to improve the experience of mothers,” said Marie Corbett, director of Midwifery.

Midwives provide care and support to women and their families while pregnant, throughout the birth and during the period after a baby’s birth. The last 14 months have been difficult for mothers but the new Danu Suite allows mothers who have just gone through birth to relax and take some time before leaving the hospital with their new baby.

Evelyn O’Rourke, manager of the postnatal ward, who identified and led out on the quality improvement of the Danu Suite, said: “We’re consistently trying to find new ways and bring new services to mothers, so we can improve their experience in Mullingar Maternity Unit. The Danu Suite was identified as a way we could help mothers while they were in the hospital. This room is comfortable and relaxing for mothers, while listening and looking at educational videos.”
