Foggy start with humid afternoon ahead

Weather Update from Met Éireann

An unsettled westerly airflow with temperatures returning to the average for May, with highs in the low to mid teens.

Foggy in many areas this morning with a weather warning for fog remaining in place until 9am. Fog will clear through the morning to leave a dry day for most areas with sunshine developing. Some pockets of fog may linger along southern coasts and in the Irish Sea. Just the chance of a spot of rain in any cloudier periods. Feeling warm and humid in highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees and light southeast or variable breezes.

Largely dry tonight with a mix of cloud and clear spells, and just a few spots of drizzle. Light to moderate southerly winds will develop. Lowest temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees, coolest and clearest in eastern areas. Localised patches of mist and fog will form.

Many areas will have a dry day tomorrow (Sunday), although there will be some light rain here or there, mainly over the western half of the country. The best of sunshine will be in the east where it will be warmest. Highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees with a moderate southwesterly breeze, fresh along Atlantic coasts.

Persistent rain will develop in Atlantic coastal counties from early on Sunday night. Cloudy but mainly dry further east overnight with patchier outbreaks of rain. Fresh south to southwest winds will develop, with strong winds along western coasts. Mild, overnight temperatures no lower than 10 to 13 degrees.

A wet and breezy or blustery day on Monday with rain becoming widespread, turning heavy at times. Rain will clear to showers later in the afternoon with some sunshine developing later. Fresh to strong southwest winds will moderate as rain clears, but remain stronger near Atlantic coasts. Highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees.

Showers will continue to feed in from the west during Monday night in moderate to fresh southwest winds, winds occasionally strong on the west coast. Some clear intervals too. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees.

A breezy day is in store for Tuesday with frequent showers mixed with sunny spells. Longer spells of rain are likely in the west and north. The best dry periods will be in the southeast. Fresh to strong and gusty southwest winds, possibly very strong for a time on Atlantic coasts. Highest temperatures of 13 to 17 degrees. Showers will persist overnight, most frequent or prolonged in the northwest with clear spells elsewhere.

Some uncertainty in the forecast for Wednesday, but better dry periods are signalled for Wednesday with more scattered showers mixed with good sunny spells. Less breezy with mainly moderate westerly winds. Highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees.

Further outlook: Generally remaining unsettled with spells of wet and breezy weather moving in from the Atlantic. Early signs show that it may settle down again for the weekend.
