Soroptimists mark 60 years in Athlone with bench gift

The members of Soroptimist International Athlone are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the club charter in 1962. To mark this special occasion Soroptimist International Athlone Club has installed a bench in the Athlone Regional Sports Centre Park. The bench is a gift to the people of Athlone to support wellbeing and to encourage friendships.

The members have also planted an oak tree to mark the centenary of Soroptimist International in the urban forest and wildlife area to highlight their work on climate change.

Pictured planting the oak tree were Annette Buckley, Pat Braiden, Deirdre Collins and Darina Dolan.

Soroptimist International is a friendship and service organisation for women. The members work on projects to enable, empower and educate women and girls, locally and internationally. National projects include Soroptimist International Girls’ Public Speaking Competition that is organised annually by all the clubs in Ireland, both north and south. All the local secondary schools in Athlone take part each year. Other projects include Climate Change and Safe Home that focused on advocating for better supports for victims of domestic abuse and coercive control.

Local projects include support for Esker House Women’s Refuge, New Horizon Refugee and Asylum Seeker Support, Meals on Wheels and the Samaritans. Soroptimist International Athlone wish to thank the people of Athlone for their generous support over the past 60 years. For more information please check www.soroptimistireland.ie
