Athlone man Anthony Hayes has been appointed to a high-profile role in English football, taking over as the caretaker manager of League One side Charlton Athletic.

The 36-year-old was named as caretaker boss of the London club after its manager, Ben Garner, was sacked yesterday.

The appointment, which was announced this morning (Tuesday), is a major step forward in the career of the Athlone IT graduate and former Athlone Town player.

His first game as caretaker manager of Charlton comes tomorrow evening, when his side travels to Stockport County for an FA Cup second round replay.

Anthony is a son of Dympna and former Athlone Town player Seamus Hayes, who previously ran Music World, a popular business in Athlone for over 30 years.
