Monksland vs St Peter's match abandoned

The CCFL Senior Division match between St Peter's and Monksland United was abandoned in stoppage time at Cushla Park yesterday (Sunday).

The two Athlone sides were level 2-2 in this local derby clash when referee Kevin Bryant called a halt to proceedings.

The referee took the decision to abandon the game after verbal exchanges involving the St Peter's sideline. Two red cards were issued to the St Peter's camp before the game was abandoned.

St Peter's had led 2-0 thanks to goals in either half from Luke Kelly and John Stapleton, but Monksland drew level with two late goals, both of which came from penalties.

The first Monksland penalty was scored by Dylan Jinks and the second was converted by Callum O’Brien, with the spot kick awarded after Jinks was adjudged to have been fouled.

The game did not restart following the second penalty as St Peter's protested over the referee's decisions.

Combined Counties Football League officials will await the referee's report before deciding whether to take disciplinary action. Depending on what is stated in the referee's report, there is a possibility that the match could be awarded to Monksland - but St Peter's would have the option of appealing such a decision.

No result from the game was included in the list of results issued by the CCFL.

Monksland went into Sunday's game on top of the Senior Division table, with St Peter's in seventh place in the nine-team division.
