Status Yellow weather warnings issued for Westmeath as heavy rain and strong winds expected
A Status Yellow weather warning for rain and strong winds is in place for Westmeath today (Thursday) as unsettled conditions are set to bring heavy downpours and gusty winds across much of the country.
Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow rain warning covering a large number of counties, including Westmeath, with the alert valid from 6am until 3pm today, March 12.
The national forecaster said rain will move across the country with some heavy downpours expected, which could lead to spot flooding in places. Poor visibility and difficult travelling conditions are also possible during periods of heavier rain.
Motorists in Westmeath and surrounding counties are being urged to take extra care on the roads this morning and early afternoon as conditions may deteriorate.
In a separate alert, Met Éireann has also issued a nationwide Status Yellow wind warning for Ireland due to strong and gusty southwesterly winds.
The wind warning came into effect at midnight and will remain in place until 6pm this evening.
According to Met Éireann, the strong winds could result in difficult travelling conditions, while debris or loose objects may be displaced. There is also a risk of some fallen branches or trees.
Road users are advised to remain cautious, particularly on exposed routes, while pedestrians and homeowners are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items.
Both warnings come as a spell of unsettled weather moves across the country, with conditions expected to gradually improve later this evening as the rain clears eastwards.
