Changing of the guard at Athlone Agri-Show

Two of the key driving forces behind Athlone Agri-Show were praised for their commitment and dedication as they stood down from their roles at the show's AGM recently. Outgoing Chairman Michael Flanagan and Treasurer Jack Moran stepped down from the committee at its AGM. Chairman Michael Flanagan welcomed the large attendance at the AGM of the Athlone Agri-Show held in the Fatted Calf, Glasson, on Monday November 21, and prior to the formalities he requested a minutes silence be observed as a mark of respect for deceased members of the Agri-Show. He then went on to thank the co-ordinators of the various sections for their time and expertise in producing one of the best Agri-Shows to date. The Athlone Agri-Show is now recognised, by exhibitors and spectators alike, as being one of the top shows in Ireland with outstanding entries in the Equine and Bovine sections closely followed by the Ovine, Poultry and Canine in what is a great day's family entertainment. New to the show this year was the Made in the Midlands Food Village which was a huge success and attracted a variety of exhibitors from all over the midlands.Mr Flanagan said sponsorship was vital to the success of the Agri-Show and it was very fortunate and extremely thankful to the main sponsor Athlone Town Council for their very generous contribution and also to all of the local sponsors for their continued support. He thanked the Gaffey family for the use of the show grounds, the local press, radio, Gardai, Order of Malta, Irish Army and all the helpers who gave so generously of their time on show day. Treasurer Jack Moran gave a positive update on the financial situation considering the present financial climate. He thanked the officers and committee for their support over the years and informed the meeting he would not be seeking re-election. Before the election of officers chairman Michael Flanagan paid a special tribute to the two secretaries, Mary Dooner in the Equine section and Oliver Flanagan as General and Bovine secretary. Their knowledge, commitment and dedication was one of the main reasons why the Agri-Show was such a success, he said. He also thanked all present for their co-operation over the past nine years while he was chairman and felt it was now time for change and hopefully the new chairperson would continue the good work and bring the show to a new level.
