Christy Moore set to perform in Roscommon
Irish music legend Christy Moore makes a welcome return to Roscommon for a unique and intimate concert when he appears with guitarist Declan Sinnott at the Hyde Centre Roscommon town on Friday September 17. Christy Moore has been singing, recording and writing songs for most of his 59 years. He has been on the road since 1966 starting out in the pubs and small folk clubs in Ireland and England and eventually performing in most of the premier concert venues throughout Ireland, England, Europe and the United States. His public musical career started in 1965 with a gig at the renowned Embankment in Tallaght while still employed as a bank official with Bank of Ireland. During the bank strike in the 1960's Christy headed for England to perform on the then thriving folk music circuit of Northern England. Part of the legendary Planxty and later Moving Hearts, it was as a solo performer, though, that Christy Moore really came into his own. By the mid 80's Christy had established himself as a major concert attraction both here and in the UK. His recordings of Lisdoonvarna, Don't Forget your Shovel, Ride On and Ordinary Man brought him a wider audience and many awards along the way. His series of concerts at Dublin's Point Depot in 1994 was the first time an Irish based artist had sold out 12 nights at the country's largest venue. Throughout the latter end of the 1990's Christy Moore continued to perform live as well as putting together a book on his life in song entitled One Voice. The gruelling live schedule however was taking its toll. There was three years between his recording of "Graffiti Tongue" in 1996 and the release of "Traveller" in 1999 and later that year after an extensive US tour Christy was advised to take a complete break on medical grounds. At this point it seemed unlikely that Christy would return to live performing but a get together with Declan Sinnott and Donal Lunny in 2001 led to a Planxty reunion concert and a hugely successful "Live at Vicar Street" CD and TV show followed. A box set of his music from 1964 to 2004 was released and Christy returned to live performing. A second "Live at The Point" followed last Christmas and firmly re-established Christy Moore as Ireland's leading concert attraction. Tickets for this unique show are now on sale from 8 'til Late Roscommon town, Music World Athlone, McDonagh's Boyle and Ticketmaster.ie
