Inland Fisheries restructuring moves closer
The formation of the new inland fisheries authority 'Inland Fisheries Ireland' moved one step closer following the announcement of Dr Ciaran Byrne as its CEO designate by Conor Lenihan, TD, Minister of State at the Department of Communications Energy and Natural Resources. Dr Byrne who is currently CEO of the Central Fisheries Board will also continue to hold the executive powers for the Central Fisheries Board pending formal establishment of the new authority. Dr Byrne's new appointment takes effect from August 1st. This high level appointment follows on the announcement of the overall rationalisation of State agencies and Government approval of proposals for the restructuring of the inland fisheries sector. Dr Byrne said "I am delighted to be appointed to the position of Chief Executive designate of Inland Fisheries Ireland. This is an exciting time for the inland fisheries sector in Ireland which is about to embark on its biggest change for almost 30 years. "I look forward to leading this transition with members of the Restructuring Implementation Group and my colleagues in the Central and Regional Fisheries Boards. It is important that we avail of the all opportunities presented during this transition. By embracing change, innovation and excellence, Inland Fisheries Ireland will be well placed to meet all current and future challenges". The new inland fisheries authority 'Inland Fisheries Ireland' will be established, following the amalgamation of the Central and seven Regional Fisheries Boards, by the enactment of new legislation to be approved by the Oireachtas before the end of 2009.
