Cheyanne goes agonisingly close to Irish boxing title

Rising female boxer Cheyanne O'Neill bowed out of the National Boxing Championships after losing 7-6 in the final last weekend at the National Stadium in Dublin.

Athlone Boxing Club's Rory Parkes said: 'After a very close and technical fight, Cheyanne can feel aggrieved that the decision did not go her way, as many at ringside believed she had done enough to defeat the current champion. Nevertheless, Cheyanne has had a great season so far and will get another chance to display her skills in the upcoming National U18 Boxing Championships which glove-off in 2 weeks.

'The competition is also open to male boxers so she'll be joined by Athlone punchers Lee Mahon and the hard-hitting Jimmy Joyce. Both boxers are looking to turn in good performances after disappointing in the provincial championships earlier this year. Everyone at the club wishes the Athlone boxers every success at the U18 Championships.'
