Update on Coláiste Chiaráin building plan

Contractor JJ Rhatigan is expected to start work on a new secondary school for Athlone's westside in the coming weeks.

Local TD Denis Naughten welcomed progress on the building of Coláiste Chiaráin - at Summerhill, Athlone, which it is expected will open its doors to pupils before summer 2020.
Naughten said it is expected that the contractor JJ Rhatigan will be on site within the coming weeks to build a completely new school designed to cater for up to 1,000 pupils from south Roscommon and the west side of Athlone.
The new school will have 37 classrooms and will include a large gymnasium with fitness suite, six hard play courts and numerous pitches, six science laboratories, specialist rooms for Art, Home Economics, Construction Studies, DCG, Music, Engineering and Technology. The ultra-modern design will also include multi-media room, library and canteen while a special educational needs ASD Unit is also incorporated into the building project.
Denis Naughten said: “With the new school to be constructed on a 28 acre site there is ample room for the development of sporting and other facilities, which will not only benefit the pupils of Coláiste Chiaráin but also the wider community.”
