Emergency services attend truck fire near busy Athlone roundabout

A cement truck caught fire near the Kilmartin's N6 roundabout in Athlone earlier today (Wednesday).

The incident occurred shortly after 11am, on the Moate side of the old Dublin Road approach to the Kilmartin's roundabout.

Athlone Fire Service attended the scene of the blaze, which is understood to have started in the truck's engine. The fire has now been extinguished and the firefighters have returned to the station.

No injuries have been reported as a result of the incident.

At the time of writing, the road closure caused by the fire is ongoing, with local diversions in place.

Efforts are being made to clear the road, to allow for its reopening, and it's currently anticipated that the road should be ready to reopen by approximately 2pm.
