Traffic mayhem in Athlone

Monksland and areas on the Athlone bypass experienced massive traffic disruption this morning due to a combination of roadworks and an accident involving a lorry. There were no injuries arising from the accident, which is thought to have occurred on the bypass in the early hours of the morning, between junction 12 (Roscommon Road) and junction 13 (Athlone West). This collision, combined with roadworks on the bypass and in Monksland, resulted in a miserable morning commute for motorists. Trips from Monksland and Bealnamulla to the centre of Athlone took up to three hours as a result of the traffic difficulties. Shorty before noon today, AA Roadwatch stated that the Athlone bypass "has reopened to westbound traffic following an earlier collision. Although one eastbound lane is now open to alleviate delays, major works are in place along the route, and all eastbound lanes will soon close with traffic diverting onto westbound lanes in a contra flow." It added: "Extremely heavy delays remain approaching Athlone on the M6, but should ease shortly. Delays too through Monksland, and on both the Dublin and Roscommon roads. Fog is lingering in the area, so slow right down and proceed with extreme care."
