Moate Tidy Towns hopeful 4,000 mown daffodils will be replaced

Members of Moate Tidy Towns are hopeful that they will be compensated for the 4,000 daffodils cut down during grass cutting in the town some weeks ago after the council confirmed they are investigating the incident. Last month, the group was incensed after planting the flowers all along the grass verges coming into and out of town, only to later find that the blooming daffodils had been mown down by workers cutting the grass. In a letter to the Moate Tidy Towns group on April 17, County Manager Danny McLoughlin stated: "I have asked local staff to have this matter examined and revert to you directly including arranging for compensation, if appropriate". Welcoming the news of the investigation, members of Moate Tidy Towns told the Westmeath Independent this week that they are happy that the local authority came back so promptly and hope the issue can be resolved soon. Members of Moate Tidy Towns had contacted all local representatives in the town this week in a bid to highlight the issue, They are eager to explore if anything could be done to salvage the project which they hoped would improve the town's standing in the upcoming National Tidy Towns competition.
