Gardai in South Roscommon target criminal gangs

Gardai in South Roscommon are stepping up the number of checkpoints in the area in a bid to target criminal gangs travelling from elsewhere in the country and cut the numbers of burglaries in the district. The intense police activity is all part of the recently launched Operation Aimsir, which has already seen a large number of garda checkpoints mounted in known or isolated locations in South Roscommon at all times of the day or night over the last few weeks. Speaking to the Westmeath Independent this week, Sgt Kieran Carroll from Roscommon Garda Station said the increased number of checkpoints are part of an ongoing operation to target criminals travelling from elsewhere in the country and reduce the number of daytime burglaries and thefts, particularly in rural areas of the county. Appealing for public co-operation and help, he said gardai have already spoken to a lot of people at the checkpoints in the last few weeks, which also double as road traffic checks and will continue to do so into the future in an attempt to cut crime in the south of the county. Meanwhile, gardai in Knockcroghery are investigating an incident where a man disturbed a possible intruder in his back garden last week. It happened in the Corboley area last Thursday, November 22, at 6pm when the owner of the house heard something at the rear of the premises. On investigation, he saw a person running from the back garden area.
