Elderly woman dies in Lecarrow accident

An 83-year-old local woman has died following an accident in South Roscommon yesterday evening. The single-car accident happened at Carrowphadeen crossroads, close to Lecarrow, at approximately 4.55pm on Tuesday when the car the woman was driving hit a hall. She was rushed to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe with serious injuries, but was pronounced dead a short time later. The crash victim has not been officially named, but is understood to hail from the nearby Glanduff area. The stretch of road was closed for several hours following the crash to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and it later re-opened at 9pm. Diversions were in place for the duration of the closure. Gardai in Roscommon are appealing for witnesses to the crash to come forward.
