Athlone people urged to support Daffodil Day tomorrow.

Cornamagh woman urges support for Daffodil Day

Nursing her mother-in-law 20 years ago, Cornamagh woman Mary Fagg saw first-hand the invaluable work of the Irish Cancer Society.

Now the local coordinator of Daffodil Day, the society’s biggest fundraiser, for the last eight years, Mary knows that the money is well spent. She was prompted to get involved in the fundraising effort having seen the value of the night nursing service and the unstinting support from the society for her family.

“I’m involved since my mother-in-law died from cancer 20 years ago.
I nursed her. I saw what the night nurses did and how dedicated they were to their work,” she said in tribute reminding the people of Athlone to support the 26th year of Daffodil Day on Friday (March 22).

“The support that was there made such a difference to us as a family.
It allowed my mother-in-law to be in her family home right to the end,” Mary explained, calling for schools, pre-schools, businesses who want to support the fundraiser or sell daffodils or other items like the mugs, keyrings etc to get in touch.

Thanking the people of the town and volunteers for their ongoing support, she said last year a total of €29, 827.50 was raised in Athlone. The Athlone coordinator said she hoped that more schools and creches will come on board this year, thanking the staff and children of Naíonra na Cré Duibhe in Coosan for their support of the venture.
