Local vintage Club aims for another world record!
Ballinalsoe and District Vintage Club are bidding to beat their own world record for the number of finger bar mowers working in one field this weekend.
Last summer, the record was set with 84 vintage finger bar mowers operating simultaneously in a field in Ballydangan, and organisers are hoping to top that figure this Saturday, August 17 from 2pm to 7pm behind Killeens pub Togher, located on the Taughmaconnell road out of Ballinasloe.
A familiar sight in rural Ireland in years gone by, the finger bar mower mounted on a tractor was used by farmers to cut grass or meadows.
Now, club members are urging people to get the mowers out of the yard or shed and working again to help set another record this year.
Mowers came from as far away as Monaghan and Clare last summer, but what was even more impressive was the number of local people who got mowers out of farmyards and even hedgerows to take part in a unique event.
84 tractors took off mowing the field and what a sight to behold as the air was filled with revving sounds and the aroma of diesel, tvo and petrol fumes as they proceeded to cut for ten minutes simultaneously being driven by people of all ages, including one lady driver.
Building on the success of this, Ballinasloe and District vintage Club are hoping to increase on these numbers of finger bar mowers this Saturday from 2pm till 7pm behind Killeens pub Togher, on the Taughmaconnell road out of Ballinasloe.
There will also be a hay making demonstration, single chop silage demonstration as well as a display of vintage cars, tractors, stationary engines, implement seats etc. In addition, there will be live entertainment with two bands. Spectators are most welcome.
