Council expect water levels to stabilise

Athlone Town Council says it does not expect water levels to rise to critical levels, predicting that the situation will stabilise over the next five days.

In a brief statement, an update to the last one of January 3, the local authority admits the Shannon water levels have remained high and are fluctuating marginally, but to date, only minor flooding has been reported at McQuade’s Bridge, Deerpark road and at Carrickobrien Road.

The council is in receipt of data from the ESB which predicts that water levels will not rise to critical levels and will stabilise over the next five days. The council are monitoring the situation closely, the statement concluded.

Athlone Town Council’s Flood Emergency Response Plan remains in operation. As part of this plan, a range of precautionary measures are being implemented to reduce the risk of flooding and to provide assistance in the areas at most risk.
