Taoiseach attends FG's euro elections convention in Athlone

Yesterday (Sunday) An Taoiseach Enda Kenny attended a Fine Gael European elections selection convention in the Sheraton Hotel in Athlone. 

Sitting MEPs Mairead McGuinness and Jim Higgins were formally nominated to contest the election for the party in the new Midlands-North-West constituency which includes Westmeath.

McGuinness who was proposed by party Chairman, Charlie Flanagan, TD and seconded by Joe McHugh TD said: “It’s good to be back campaigning in Westmeath, a county I had the honour of representing in my first term in the European Parliament from 2004.”

The MEP who was last year elected Vice-Chair of the EPP group in the European Parliament was recently appointed by the Taoiseach as leader of the Fine Gael delegation in the European Parliament.

She told the convention that she had every confidence that Fine Gael could win two seats in the constituency in the elections on May 23.
