Athlone flood fears recede despite recent stormy weather

A rise in water levels over the next five days is predicted by Athlone Town Council, however, the local authority does not believe any flooding of homes will occur.
In the latest statement this evening, the council said the level of the River Shannon remains high, but has stablised over recent days.

“Based on current forecasts and the ESB model, it is predicted to rise over the next five days, but to a level that will not cause flooding to the lowest lying houses in Athlone,” the statement maintains.

The situation will be kept under constant review and a further update will be issued by Athlone Town Council if the situation changes significantly.
