Water levels to rise, but council says houses won't flood

The level of the River Shannon in Athlone remains high and is forecast to rise over the next five days. However, the predicted rise will not flood the lowest lying houses in Athlone.

That's the view of Athlone Town Council, which issued a statement on the water levels in the region this evening.

The council said it was monitoring all critical points as per the flood emergency response plan and the situation will be kept under constant review. A further update would issue if the situation changed significantly.
