TRIBUTE: Nicky's bravery and dignity in facing illness was an inspiration

The Westmeath Independent was deeply saddened to hear of the death of popular local TD Nicky McFadden this afternoon (Tuesday).

Nicky's friendly and genial nature enabled her to earn respect right across the political spectrum.

Since being diagnosed with motor neurone disease, the brave and dignified way in which she bore her illness was an inspiration to so many people around the country.

Elected as a Fine Gael TD for Longford/Westmeath in 2011, Nicky had a deep sense of pride in her home town of Athlone and an abiding commitment to the underprivileged.

Family and friends were the centre of Nicky's life and she will be very sadly missed by those close to her; but her loss will also be deeply felt by the wider community locally.

Nicky's father Brendan had served his local area as a public representative for many years, and Nicky was very proud of her political heritage.
