Donal Jackson and John McNamara have been eliminated on the first count. The electorate for the constituency was 87,999 and the total poll was 50,495 with 1,492 invalid votes, leaving the valid poll as 49,003. The quota has been announced as 24,502

17:59: Count staff, candidates and their representatives appear to be finalising the doubtful votes now in Keenagh

17:25: We're still waiting on the results of the first count in Keenagh and there is speculation now that An Taoiseach Enda Kenny is due at the count centre before 9pm

15:59: Fianna Fáil's Aengus O'Rourke has attended the count centre at Keenagh and said he is delighted with his vote, which he said was strong throughout Longford and Westmeath.

14:22: Boxer has been at the election count centre in Keenagh and has confirmed he will contest the next general election for Longford/Westmeath. He said he is delighted with his first preference vote. See next week's Westmeath Independent for full interview.

14:20: The results of the first count are expected at approximately 5pm.

12:48: The final tally showed that Boxer topped the poll in the Athlone area with a first preference vote of 3,304, compared to McFadden's first preference of 2,893, while O'Rourke got a first preference of 1,941 in Athlone and Hogan got 1,680 first preference votes.

The final tally shows:

- McFadden picked up 4,058 first preference votes from county Longford and 6,090 from Westmeath.

- O'Rourke got 3,055 first preference votes in Longford and 4,474 in Longford.

- Hogan picked up 2,099 first preference in Longford and 3,838 in Westmeath.

- Boxer picked up 783 first preference votes in Longford and 3,944 in Westmeath.

 

12:32: Final tallies are now in for the Longford/Westmeath by-election with 5% of boxes not tallied. Some Meath West boxes were included in the tally earlier, which was giving a lower tally percentage so the final tallies are:

11.32: Latest tallies show Gabrielle McFadden (FG) still at 26% with 54% of the boxes open, with a first preference vote of 7,246, followed by Aengus O'Rourke (FF) who remains at 19% with a first prefence vote of 5,214. James Morgan (Ind) and Kevin 'Boxer' Moran (Ind) are both at 15%, Boxer with a first preference of 4,258 and Morgan with 4,263. Paul Hogan has 14% of the vote with a first preference of 3,974.

The other candidates are as follows:Brian Fagan (Ind) 4% with 994 first preference, Donal Jackson (Ind) 1% with 224 first preference, Denis Leonard (Lab) 3% with 973 first preference and John McNamara (Ind) at 3% with 732 first preference votes.

Of the boxes tallied there has been a 45% turnout and the quota is now expected to be 25,677 once all boxes are opened.

 

11.23am: 46% of the tally boxes are now open in Keenagh and show McFadden ahead with 26% of the vote, O'Rourke remains at 19%, Moran is at 17%, Morgan at 16% and Hogan at 14%.

Tallies show McFadden with a first preference vote of 5,958, while her closest competitor O'Rourke has a first preference of 4,380.

The tally now indicates a turnout of 45% and a likely quota of 24,763 once all boxes are opened.
