The late Anthony Carberry

Search for missing Longford man ends in tragedy

The two week search for missing Longford native, Anthony Carberry, which had included comprehensive searches in Westmeath, ended in tragedy at the weekend. The body of the 50-year-old, who was last seen on Friday July 18, was discovered in County Roscommon. The grim discovery was made by a farmer who was attending his land near Strokestown.
On Tuesday last, July 29, a 30-strong search party, led by Mullingar based Sgt Roger Nicholson and including members of Westmeath Civil Defence, the Order of Malta Ambulance Corps, the Red Cross, family members and the public combed areas close to where Mr Carberry was last seen.
There was a heavy concentration along the N4 from Rathowen to the Longford border, while other areas searched included Lacken, Multyfarnham, Ballinalack and woodland adjacent to the lake at Ballinalack. However, no trace was found of Mr Carberry during the day-long search.
The gardaí have expressed their appreciation of the public’s support and co-operation in their efforts to locate Mr Carberry.
