Local author’s second novel draws plaudits

Ballinasloe-based author Nuala Ní Chonchúir’s second novel The Closet of Savage Mementos has recently been published by Dublin literary publisher New Island to favourable reviews.

The book was launched in Dublin’s Gutter Bookshop in April and since then Ní Chonchúir has been to Italy on the Italo-Irish Literature Exchange, at the West Cork Literary Festival and at the International Short Story Conference in Vienna.

Set in Scotland and Dublin and Galway, the novel is partially based on the author’s experience of working in the Highlands and of an unplanned pregnancy. The Sunday Times has called the book ‘...her finest novel yet’ and The Evening Echo said of it: ‘Compelling and deeply accomplished, The Closet of Savage Mementos is the product of a powerful literary talent.’

Nuala, who has lived in Galway since 1996, is originally from Dublin, and is an award-winning novelist, short fiction writer and poet.
