Popular athlone band to launch debut album tonight

Popular Athlone band Macey South will launch their self-titled album in Sean’s Bar tonight at 9pm.

The electric-trad musicians blend contemporary and traditional Irish music to create their unique sound.

“There’s no mix like it out there,” explained vocalist Liam Flynn.
Comparable to greats such as The Pogues and The Horselips, the album draws influences from a variety of genres and captures the fast-paced energy of the band.

The trio are particularly excited to be releasing their original music on the album, as well as cover-versions.

“We’re all delighted with how it sounds,” said Liam.
The band consists of 23-year-old Liam Flynn, 21-year-old Keith Flynn and 24-year-old Conor Irwin. Macey South have been performing together for a decade, since their days attending Athlone Community College.

Liam also plays harmonica and accordion in the band. His brother Keith provides vocals and rhythm guitar. Conor plays electric guitar, bass drums and adds a creative twist to the band by playing the hi-hat with his feet.

There is no “leader” in the group, Liam explained. “Everyone has equal responsibility.”

The band have already completed a tour of England, and have supported famous artists such as The Fureys and The High Kings. They have extensive experience playing at various locations throughout Ireland, and performing at weddings and other events.

The group especially enjoy performing in their native Athlone and praised the high musical standards in the town.
“The quality of live music is very good,” said Liam.

Macey South are one of a kind and will delight audiences both young and old. The album, ’Macey South’, can be purchased during the launch night at Sean’s Bar. The CD will then be available locally from Sean’s Bar, The Snug Bar, Spar in Garrycastle and Dan’s Tavern. The album will be available for purchase from music shops and on iTunes before Christmas.

Liam expressed the band’s gratitude for their continued support, particularly in their home town.

“We have a huge following around Athlone.” This is an album for their fans. “It’s great to be able to give something back to the supporters who have been loyal to us for all these years.”
