Met Eireann's forecast for tonight

Wrap up well tonight folks

Met Eireann is forecasting temperatures as low as minus 3 degree celsius tonight in what could be one of the coldest nights of the year so far.

It’s predicted to be bitterly cold and frosty tonight, with icy stretches. There will be minimum temperatures of zero to minus 3 degrees celsius.

Met Eireann said it will be cold, very windy and showery today (Thursday) with some of the showers heavy and of hail, with scattered thunderstorms for a time, mainly in parts of the west and north, where some of the showers will be wintry over high ground.

More persistent rain will spread from the Atlantic during the afternoon and evening, affecting Munster, Connacht and much of Leinster, with some sleet in northern counties.

Maximum temperatures just 4 or 5 Celsius in the north, 5 to 9 Celsius elsewhere. Strong and very gusty westerly winds will ease slowly.

Later this evening and for a time tonight, it will be mostly cloudy, with outbreaks of rain turning heavy in southern counties and with some sleet in places.

The north and northwest will have clear spells and scattered wintry showers and these clearer conditions will spread to all parts overnight, but it will become bitterly cold and frosty, with icy stretches. Further wintry showers also, mainly in the southwest, west and north. Minimum temperatures 0 to minus 3 celsius.
