Local teen absconds during toilet break

A local teenager in detention in Oberstown absconded from custody en-route to a family event in Athlone at the weekend.

The juvenile, who is just 15, was being brought to an approved family event at the time by the detention school authorities. However, during a toilet break at a local garage the boy fled and made a run for it on foot.

A spokesperson for the Department of Children and Youth Affairs confirmed on Wednesday that the individual concerned is still at large. The department said the 15-year-old absconded while on his way to a family occasion in Athlone.

Oberstown school, in compliance with policy, informed local Gardaí immediately following the abscond, the department spokesperson added.
The youngster is believed to be serving a substantial sentence for burglary offences.
