Mutaz Essa Barshim was the star of the show of at the Athlone IT International Grand Prix last night, thrilling a sell-out crowd as he set an Asian record and an indoor personal best clearing 1.41 metres in the high jump.


Although the 23-year-old Quatari national failed narrowly in his attempts at the world record, he certainly won the hearts of fans with his athletic prowess on the night, smashing the high jump stadium record of 2.15m set by Kourosh Foroughi last year.

Despite some timing issues in the sprint events, it proved to be a great night of athletics before a loud capacity crowd. American Ben Blankenship rounded off the event in some style in the mile event, killing the competition to run the first sub-four minute mile indoors in Ireland. He clocked 3.56.76.
