Garda warning for motorists after roscommon incident

Local Gardai are appealing to motorists to check their tyres regularly and replace where necessary.

It comes after the Garda Twitter feed posted a picture this morning of a car stopped in Roscommon with wire exposed in the two front tyres.

Officers are asking motorists to ensure tyres are changed regularly to ensure safe conditions for driving.

Michelin, one of the main manufacturers of tyres worldwide, maintain that driving with low tread depth in your tyres increases the potential for tyre failure and aquaplaning.

Low tread depth in winter weather conditions can severely reduce grip and control. Motorists driving with tyres under the legal limit also risk a fine.

In the Roscommon case, Gardai stopped the driver on the phone and subsequently discovered the faulty tyres. A fixed penalty notice was issued for the holding a mobile phone while driving offence, while he was also sent to change the tyres before travelling further.
