FLOODING LATEST: Level of River Shannon poised to recede

The level of the River Shannon through Athlone is expected to begin to recede over the next few days.

That's according to the latest update issued by Westmeath County Council at lunchtime today. The council says that while the level remains high, it is expected to stabilise and then recede over the coming days.

Power was returned to the Bastion Quay apartments on yesterday evening and residents have returned to their apartments. As of this morning there are 32 families in emergency accommodation.

The Flood Response Interagency Coordination Group met this morning and all flood defences, pumping, accommodation and transport needs continue to be met.

The public is advised to exercise extreme caution in flooded areas and in the vicinity of the River Shannon.

A further update will issue after the next meeting of the Flood Response Coordination Group, which will take place on Friday at 11am.
