Two hospitalised after serious crash

Two people were brought to hospital following a two-car collision at The Pigeons shortly before noon yesterday (Wednesday).

The cars were involved in a head-on collision on the N55 between Ballymahon and Athlone at 11.45am yesterday.

A female driver was brought to Tallaght hospital by air ambulance, while a male driver was brought by ambulance to the Midland Regional Hospital, Tullamore. Both injured drivers were the sole occupants of their respective cars.

The serious injuries sustained are not believed to be life-threatening although drivers had to be cut from the vehicles by members of Fire Service who attended the scene.

The national secondary route was closed for a number of hours as Forensic Collision Investigators from An Garda Siochana visited the scene.

Gardai in Athlone are seeking to make contact with any witnesses who saw either vehicle, a Volkswagen Golf and a Toyota Avensis, travelling between 11.30-11.45am in the vicinity of The Pigeons.
