VIDEO: Enjoy Athlone man Robbie Benson's wonder goal last night

Athlone man Robbie Benson slammed home an unstoppable volley in last night's UEFA Champions League play off second leg clash against Legia Warsaw last night.

Benson, who played schoolboy football with St Francis and the Athlone and District Schoolboy League, before featuring for Athlone Town and UCD, struck in the 19th minute with this absolute stunner.

Unfortunately, for Benson and his Dundalk team-mates, the goal didn't propel the Airtricity League champions to secure the priceless second away goal which would have tied up the tie at 2-2 - and prompted extra time.

Instead, the Poles, who were down to ten men, for over 25 minutes, struck deep in injury time to level matters in Warsaw and go through 3-1 on aggregate.

Dundalk now enter into the group stages of the Europa League, and are guaranteed at least six more European games this season.

They will be among the group of fourth seeds for Friday's draw. Among the first seeds in pot 1 are the likes of Man Utd, Zenit St Petersburg, Inter Milan, Roma, Fiorentina, and Schalke.

Benson's goal grabbed the attention of football lovers across social media with even Gary Lineker acclaiming the superb strike.
