Sean's in Athlone among the top ten Irish pubs with a cosy fire

The accolades keep rolling in for Sean's Bar in Athlone.

It was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest pub in Europe, and earlier this year it was the only Irish pub to be featured in '50 Bars To Blow Your Mind’, a book by travel guide publisher Lonely Planet.

Now the Shannonside hostelry has been selected as one of the top ten pubs in the country with a cosy fire around which people can enjoy music and craic.

Voting for the very best of these pubs has been taking place on the Bord na Móna facebook page.

Once the votes are counted, Bord na Móna will help the top three pubs celebrate by hosting their very own Hearth Session in November, featuring acoustic sets around the fire with Irish artists Róisín O and Brave Giant.

The Bord na Móna top 10 Pubs with Hearth is as follows:

1. The Harbour Bar, Bray

2. The Strand Bar, Sligo

3. The Oval Bar, Cork

4. Sean's Bar, Athlone

5. Kelly's Bar, Birr

6. Silken Thomas, Kildare Town

7. The Merry Ploughboy Irish Music Pub, Dublin

8. O'Connor's Bar, Galway

9. Nancy Blakes, Limerick

10. Johnson's Pub, Newbridge, Co. Kildare
