Motorway between Athlone and Moate reopening after accident

An accident involving a jeep with a trailer carrying cattle caused the temporary closure of the M6 motorway between Athlone and Moate today.

Thankfully, according to a representative of Athlone Garda Station, there were no injuries as a result of the incident.

At approximately 12.10pm the Garda representative told the Westmeath Independent that the motorway was in the process of being reopened and that it would be open again in the next five minutes or so.

The jeep and trailer with cattle was travelling Eastbound on the motorway when the incident occurred before 11am.

The M6 was then closed in both directions between J7 Moate West and J8 Athlone East as motorists were diverted onto the N6 old Dublin to Galway road.

The Athlone Garda representative said the decision to close the motorway was taken to ensure the safety of road users. He said the trailer had been loaded up again and the road was nearly ready to reopen.
