Mr Waldron is a native of Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo. He has been living in Bealnamulla, Athlone, for a number of years with his wife, Dolores, and daughters, Christina and Ruth, who attend Cloonakilla National School.
He is currently working with the Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST) on secondment from Mercy Secondary School, Kilbeggan, where he taught Construction Studies, Materials Technology (Wood), Technical Graphics and Design, and Communication Graphics.
Mr Waldron said: 'I'm very excited and delighted to have been appointed. I'm looking forward to the challenge.
“There is obviously a lot of work to be done and I am looking forward to working with the two schools, the patron, the board of management, and the project management committee.”
Mr Waldron paid tribute to all who have worked to bring the amalgamated school project to this point, saying it was “an exciting development for Athlone and South Roscommon.”
He said the new school building would be a “state of the art” facility which would include “some of the very best educational facilities in the country.”
