Garda warning to householders after spate of burglaries

Gardai are warning householders to secure all doors following three burglaries in Athlone over the last week where electronic equipment and phones were opportunistically taken from unlocked homes.

Two tablet computers were taken from a home in the Drumaconn housing estate in Cornamaddy on Tuesday (June 13 last), when the culprit walked in the back door and simply took the computers off the table before departing the scene.

In another similar incident in Willow Park, cigarettes and a mobile phone were taken via an unlocked rear door on Sunday, June 18 at 9.30pm. Around the same time a number of phones, iPad and a purse were stolen from an apartment in Kilmacoo. Again, entry was gained via an unsecured door.

In a bid to halt this type of opportunistic crime, Sgt Dermot Monaghan appealed to householders to make sure all doors, front and back, are secured at all times.

Elsewhere, a front window of a Chinese restaurant was smashed along the Dublin Road between Sunday night and Monday afternoon (June 19) and a variety of electronics, including three tablet computers and a hard drive, along with
€1,000 in cash were stolen from the premises.

Gardai are examining the possibility that some or all of the incidents are linked.
Anyone who witnessed anything unusual in any of the above areas or can assist the investigation is asked to call Athlone Garda Station on 090 6498550.
Meanwhile, separately, an iPad and a quantity of cosmetics were swiped from a car at Glendeer Pet Farm in Drum last week.
