Appeal for witnesses after young man is robbed in Athlone

Burgess Park, Athlone.

Gardai have appealed for information after a young man was robbed in broad daylight in the centre of Athlone yesterday (Wednesday).

The incident occurred in Burgess Park at approximately 12.30pm.

The victim, a local man in his 20s, saw another young male by the edge of the river. Thinking that the individual might be in distress, he decided to approach him.

The man by the river then proceeded to threaten the victim with a box cutter knife and stole €50 from him.

Sergeant Andrew Haran said Gardai were examining CCTV footage and were hopeful that members of the public might be able to provide some assistance.

Anyone who was in or around the Burgess Park area at the time, and witnessed anything suspicious, is asked to contact Athlone Garda Station on: 090 64 92600.
