Duo arrested over thefts from staff at Athlone hotel

Two people were arrested at a Garda checkpoint near Moate this week after they allegedly stole items from staff areas of the Sheraton Athlone Hotel while staying there.

Sergeant Andrew Haran of Athlone Garda Station said an 18-year-old male from Dublin and a 23-year-old female from Athy were charged with stealing from a staff room and other private areas of the hotel.

He said the items that were stolen included bank cards, cash, a driving licence, and toiletries. The pair stayed in the Sheraton on Sunday night and were travelling back in the direction of Dublin on Monday.

A special Garda traffic operation for the bank holiday weekend - named 'Operation Taitneamh' - was in place at the time and a description of their vehicle was circulated among officers.

This resulted in the arrests being made after their vehicle was stopped at a checkpoint near Moate.
