Arrest after alleged sexual assault in Glasson

A 21-year-old man has been arrested after an alleged sexual assault in the Glasson area yesterday afternoon.
It is alleged the man sexually assaulted a woman on the side of the road in the Glasson area on Monday afternoon before two local men came to her assistance.
At about 2.30pm on Monday gardai in Athlone received a call from a member of the public reporting an incident of dangerous driving in the Glasson area. When they were responding to this call, gardai came across a man grappling with another man in Glasson.
After follow up enquiries and taking statements it became apparent that the man who had been confronted by members of the public was the same man at the centre of the dangerous driving complaint.
Gardai arrested the man – a 21-year-old Eastern European – on suspicion of sexual assault, drink driving, dangerous driving, assault on two members of the public, obstruction of a garda and assault on a garda.
The man was brought to Athlone Garda Station where he was detained for questioning under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. He had had his period of detention extended by the Chief Superintendent and he remains in custody.
