Seána Kerslake and Seán McGinley star as embattled couple in Eugene McCabe’s searing domestic drama King of the Castle

‘Sex is the currency of the play, the language into which everything else – greed, history, the rise of the self-made man – is translated.’           Fintan O’Toole*

Druid revives an unsung Irish classic with epic staging and a stellar cast.

Séan McGinley plays Scober MacAdam. Scober is king of the castle, a once glorious Big House in County Leitrim with an extensive farm.  He has a young wife, Tressa, played by Seána Kerslake, but their marriage is childless and frustrated. When rumours threaten Scober’s pride, he concocts a plan that jeopardises all he has worked for.

King of the Castle is very much a play of its time but the central themes still resonate today, being steeped in a world of patriarchy and religion that invades the personal and the intimate’ says Artistic Director Garry Hynes. ‘Staging a play with deep-rooted issues, a big cast and a demanding setting is always a challenge, but it presents another great opportunity for us to undertake a project that is ambitious and provocative.’

This is the first major revival of the production in over 30 years and sees hugely successful stage and screen actor Seán McGinley’s welcome return to Druid. Seán, an integral company member since its foundation in Galway over 40 years ago, played memorable roles over the years in productions including Waiting for GodotConversations on a Homecoming and Playboy of the Western World. Seána Kerslake will be familiar to many from RTÉ’s recent series, Can’t Cope, Won’t Cope and particularly for her stand out performance for the titular role in the IFTA-winning A Date for Mad MaryThey are joined by a stellar cast: Ryan Donaldson, Marty Rea, John Olohan, Peter Daly, Bosco Hogan, Steve Blount and Anthony Moriarty.
