BREAKING: Arrest in connection with Athlone shooting

A teenage boy has been arrested this morning for questioning in connection with last night's shooting in the town.

The boy was arrested early this morning and is being held in Athlone Garda Station.

He is being held under Section 30 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The victim of the shooting, in his 20s, was shot close to the knee in the Irishtown area of Athlone at around 9.40pm last night.

Locals report hearing a number of shots being fired.

The victim has now been discharged from hospital.
