'50 Plus Expo' gets underway in Athlone

The entertaining and informative 50 Plus Expo, a lifestyle event for retired and older people, returns to The Hodson Bay Hotel, Athlone today (Tuesday) and tomorrow. 

And the organisers are promising a great day out with something for everybody. They also point out that visitors do not have to be over 50 and that everybody is welcome, regardless of age

This free admission event will feature Eric Knowles, well-known for his appearances on BBC One TV hit programme The Antiques Roadshow. He will give free valuations for small collectibles and other articles, and larger items from photographs.

Well known consumer affairs broadcaster Conor Pope will advise visitors how they can spend less and save themselves from poor customer service. Conor will also reveal many of the tricks of the trade supermarkets employ to entice customers to spend more than they intended.

Mary O’Rourke, who wrote the best-selling autobiography, Just Mary, will host a creative writing workshop.

International coin, medal and stamp expert Mike Kelly will be on hand to value items, as well as banknotes. Mike, who has written a best-selling book on these disciplines, will offer free valuations. At a recent event, he discovered coins worth €30,000.

Other attractions will include free health screenings and talks, arts and crafts workshops, and cookery demonstrations.

The event, which has been running all over Ireland for more than 20 years, features a mix of displays, presentations and demonstrations, covering many of the interests of the over 50s such as finance, health, travel, fashions, homes and gardens, security and legal issues.

Hotels from all over Ireland will be promoting their ‘golden years’ breaks while a number of tour companies will feature sun and long winter breaks promotion.

Genealogy will be a feature of the event with experts on hand to assist in tracing your family history.

There will be a free shuttle bus service to and from Athlone Railway Station to the venue.

The 50 Plus Expo takes place from 12 noon until 5pm on Tuesday July 16 and from 11am until 5pm on Wednesday, July 17.
