GAA club notes

Ballymore GAA Notes: Ballymore started this year's Under 21 Football Championship with an away match against local rivals Tang last Saturday afternoon. The weather did its best to spoil the occasion with gusty winds making handling difficult for both teams. It was Ballymore who took the game by the scruff of the neck and ground out a hard fought victory with Daly McCormack staring with a personal score of 1-5. This was the first time Ballymore supporters got to see how the team would shape up since the decision to split from Milltown and field a side on their own. At the final whistle it proved to be a good decision with Ballymore running our winners with a score line or 1-6 to 0-4. Team: Conor McNeil, Paddy Harrington, Anthony McKnight, Declan Rooney, Andy Slevin, Seamus Keena, Frank Hughes, Sam Hooley, John Gilligan, Alan Slevin, Peter Burns, Daly McCormack and Anthony Martin. The second match in the Under 21 Football Championship took place in Ballymore last Bank Holiday Monday with Ballycomoyle, who had a first round bye, providing the opposition. Having played just two days previously the Ballymore management team made a couple of changes. From the first whistle Ballycomoyle broke up field and fired over a point which caught Ballymore cold however it was the home team who then raised their game as they took hold of the first half of this tough encounter. Good link up play between Anthony McKnight and Brian Finnerty found Daly McCormack open and he took his point to make the scores level and set up a strong period of play from Ballymore. Two points from Brain Finnerty followed by a fine solo run from his own half by John Gilligan which he finished in style put the home team three points ahead. Declan Rooney added a point soon after and then a good pass from Anthony McKnight found Daly who hit the back of the net and Ballymore's grip on the match got tighter. The teams then traded points before Daly found the net again to push Ballymore further ahead. With the game becoming a little one sided Ballycomoyle dug deep and rattled over three points themselves followed by an opportunistic goal which put them right back in the match just before the break. At half-time the score line saw Ballymore in front by 2-5 to 1-5. At the start of the second half, Ballymore made a change to their line up with Anthony Martin replacing Peter Burn and with the half only a few minutes old Sean Kincaid came in as a blood sub for John Gilligan who took a high tackle and looked dazed as a result. Daly McCormack picked up where he had left off in the first half and fired over three unanswered points before Alan Slevin broke free of his marker and found the back of the net with an unstoppable shot. John Gilligan returned to the action and you could see the fight drain from the Ballycomoyle players who were second to ever ball as Ballymore stepped up a gear. Further points from Brian Finnerty, Daly McCormack and Alan Slevin and then additional goals from Alan Slevin and a classy finish from Brian Finnerty put the game well out of sight for Ballycomoyle. Sean Kincaid was then introduced for John Gilligan and David Slevin was replaced by Pete Murray and it was left to Pete making his football debut and sporting a much talked about haircut to score the final point in an impressive 5-11 to 1-6 win. Team: Conor McNeil, Paddy Harrington, Anthony McKnight, Sean Keena, Andy Slevin, Declan Rooney, Sam Hooley, John Gilligan, Peter Burns, Alan Slevin, David Slevin, Daly McCormack and Brian Finnerty. It has now been re-fixed for this Saturday, November 7. Throw in 2.30pm Division 6 Final Tubberclair played Rosemount away in the Division 6 final on Monday last. The game started brightly for Tubberclair and controlled the game for much of the half. Tubberclair missed a number of gilt-edge chances for scores but their dominance slowly started to reap reward. Tubberclair notched up four points from David Fagan (0-2), Danial Sammon (0-1) and David Cassells(0-1) before Rosemount kicked their first point. An opportunist ball into the Rosemount back line from Bean Cassells eluded the home keeper and nestled in the back of the net. Rosemount replied with another point before the half time whistle sounded. Half time score 0-2 to 1-4 in favour of Tubberclair. The second half started in similar fashion as the first with Tubberclair adding two points to their tally from Robbie Buckley and Kevin Connaughton. The Tubberclair defence then got themselves in a muddle which resulted in Danny Keegan having to clear of the goal line which would certainly have lifted the home team. Tubberclair's reply was instant and Danny Keegan finished off a good move by slotting the ball into the bottom corner of the net. This put Tubberclair in a commanding position in the game. Danial Sammon and Danny Keegan added two further points before the home side got their first score of the half. At this point Rosemount were really testing Tubberclair's defence but the goal they sought never materialised. Rosemount did add four points with Tubberclair adding two from Danial Sammon and David Fagan, before the final time whistle was blown. Full Time score: Tubberclaire 2-10. Rosemount 0-7. The weather conditions were never going to allow both teams to serve up an entertaining game with Tubberclair playing into a gale force wind in the first half. Moate used this to their advantage and scored 1-8 to Tubberclair's 0-1. The first half scoring exploits of Moate left Tubberclair with an uphill battle in the second half and they were unable to cut back the lead. The players battled hard with David Fagan finishing to the Moate net on two occasions. Moate, however, never let the Tubberclair lads into the game and scored a further three points in the half with Tubberclair's Daniel Sammon and Conor Delaney scoring a point each before the game ended.
