Athlone area set to host third level football feast

By Kieran Galvin The concluding stages of the Sigerson Cup will form the highlight of a feast of third level football action in the Athlone area this weekend. Hosts Athlone IT face UCC in their eagerly-awaited Sigerson Cup semi-final tomorrow (Friday, 2.30pm), with holders DCU taking on DIT in the first semi-final at 12.45. The Sigerson Cup final will take place on Saturday at 3pm - and it will be shown live on TG4. With Athlone having been designated European Tour of Sport status for 2013, this weekend's Sigerson Cup action will showcase the excellent facilities at AIT - which now include the recently opened world class International Arena (indoor athletics track). While the Sigerson Cup is the main attraction, other parts of the South Westmeath area will host games in the Trench Cup, Corn na Mac Leinn and Corn Comhairle Ardoideachais. Tubberclair, Mount Temple (Caulry GAA pitch), Rosemount, Garrycastle and Pairc Chiarain (home of Athlone GAA club) are the other venues involved. Fixture details are listed below.
