MOATE boxer John Joyce has progressed to the last 16 at the World Youth Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Joyce, 16, who represents the St Michael’s, Athy club, defeated Egypt’s Mohamed Hikal, 3-0, in his opening bout at the tournament yesterday in the 69kg category.
However, Ireland’s other boxer from yesterday, Ballinacargy’s Wayne Kelly (64kg), exited the tournament having been defeated by Kazakhstan’s Ayan Kalibekov.

Joyce is one of nine Irish boxers representing their country at the World Youth Championships.
