Henshaw nominated for player of the tournament award

Having helped Ireland to retain the Six Nations title in dramatic fashion last weekend, Robbie Henshaw is one of three Irish players nominated for the Player of the Championship award.

Henshaw from Athlone was ever present in the Ireland team which clinched the title on scoring difference by virtue of their 40-10 victory over Scotland in Murrayfield last Saturday. The Coosan man played in all five games at inside centre and he scored a memorable try – his first at senior international level - in the victory over England.

Ireland, England and Wales all finished on eight points in the final standings of the Six Nations table, but Joe Schmidt’s side retained their crown on scoring difference.

Both Wales and England came very close to denying Ireland. The Welsh hammered the Italians 60-20 in Rome last Saturday, before Ireland’s convincing win over Scotland in Edinburgh.

Yet there was even more drama to come. In what was a truly amazing game, England defeated France in a dramatic rollercoaster of a match at Twickenham, 55-35. But they fall agonizingly short of denying the Irish.

The other Ireland players nominated for the player of the tournament award are inspirational captain Paul O’Connell and scrum-half Conor Murray.

The full list of players nominated is as follows:

Dan Biggar (Wales)

George Ford (England)

Jonny Gray (Scotland)

Stuart Hogg (Scotland)

Alun Wyn Jones (Wales)

Jonathan Joseph (England)

Conor Murray (Ireland)
