Athlone town boss steps down

Eddie Wallace has resigned as manager of Athlone Town.

The club, in a surprise statement on Saturday evening, said that Wallace had decided to step down with immediate efect.

The club said that Wallace made the decision due to 'personal and family commitments'.

The statement said the club wished to thank Wallace for his professionalism, commitment, knowledge and hard work.

The club said: 'We all have learned from a true gentleman of Irish soccer. All our best wishes go with him and his family for the future.'

Early speculation on possible candidates includes former Mervue United manager Johnny Glynn. However, a return of Roddy Collins is highly unlikely as he is expected to be officially confirmed as Waterford United's new manager this weekend.
